“The Zone Afterschool Program” is a proactive, community-based, afterschool program targeting seventh through twelfth graders in Norfolk, Nebraska. The program’s mission is to promote the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being of adolescents. The afterschool program provides a safe environment that strengthens social skills and character. Youth are encouraged to develop goals to guide their educational journey, which will in turn allow them to establish a sense of purpose and control over their own lives.
The afterschool program focuses on six program areas:
- Health and Wellness
- Community Involvement
- Special activities
Education is our number one priority. Our daily programming includes 30 minutes of homework time. Staff and youth mentors provide tutoring help. Technology and other supplies are available to support the educational path of Zone youth.
The Zone Afterschool Program/Marilyn Schreiber College scholarship is given at our “End of the Year” celebration to a graduating Zone youth who has consistently modeled the values of The Zone and has actively participated in Zone programming.
Enrichment activities help youth to grow as people. The enrichment program activities are designed to build skills and enhance personal interests. Zone youth can participate in various activities like basketball, yoga, arts and crafts, leadership, cooking and baking. These fun activities can spark interest in possible career ideas!
Health and Wellness
Our health and wellness program includes opportunities to participate in physical activities at the city gym, yoga sessions, healthy snacks and lessons on nutrition. Teaching and dialogue about healthy relationships, drugs and alcohol abuse, bullying and other relevant topics our youth are encountering in their day-to-day lives.
Our youth will have opportunities for community involvement. Youth will learn about the community and ways they can give of their time, talents, and treasures.
Zone Leadership Group
The Zone Leadership Group is made of youth who have been participating in The Zone programming for a year. Youth who consistently exemplify the values of The Zone are nominated and interviewed by staff. Youth strengthen their leadership skills by helping plan and carry out activities with other Zone youth and community service projects.
Special activities will include Friday night fun once a month at The Zone during the school year, Thanksgiving dinner with family, and our “End of the Year” celebration where we honor our youth participants!
